Mental Self-Defense
As you continue to progress through the belt system at Kicks Karate your skill and confidence will improve. You’ll be prepared to react in all situations, knowing that you have the skills to protect yourself. However, you’ll be able to avoid or de-escalate most situations just by remaining calm and confident.
Emotional Self-Defense
“Words will never hurt me…”
When we were kids, we were told: “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” As good as that sounds, it is often not true. Words can create deep wounds, especially in someone with low self-esteem. Kicks Karate students are able to gain a sense of accomplishment while improving self-esteem as they learn new skills and improve existing skills.
Respect for Others, by Others
All respect begins with self-respect. By learning to respect yourself, you will gain a great level of respect for your fellow students and instructors. As you progress through the rankings you will also begin to notice how other students begin to deepen their respect for you.
Tradition
At Kicks Karate, we attempt to respect the past while embracing the present and keeping an eye on the future. Our martial arts style is known as Shudokan karate as taught by the legendary Okinawan master, Kanken Toyama. After Toyama migrated to Japan in the early 20th century, he began teaching at Nihon University, where one of his students was a young Korean named Ki Whang Kim. Eventually, Ki Whang Kim returned to Korea where he further refined the techniques he learned from Toyama. In the early 1960’s, Grandmaster Ki Whang Kim moved to the United States where he later taught Master John Bussard of Kicks Karate. While some of our curricula have been adapted to better fit the self-defense needs of today, you will be practicing martial arts techniques that have been literally passed down for hundreds of years.
Life Skills
Skills you will learn at Kicks Karate also carry over to other areas in life. For example, balance and flexibility are required to throw a good kick. These same attributes may be needed in other areas of your life as well. For example, a better balance may be needed between your work and social life, and flexibility may be required in a business transaction.
Learning Environment
We subdivide our teen and adult classes into smaller groups to focus on the specific needs of beginner, intermediate and advanced students. This allows students to train at the appropriate level for constant improvement.
Top Flight Instruction
Our Black Belt instructors are certified and taught by Master John Bussard. They are trained in the most modern and effective teaching methods to ensure that all our students are taught properly and safely. In addition, our staff knows how to make sure that classes are fun and enjoyable.
Flex-Schedule
We understand that our students’ lives are very busy. That’s why we recommend that students try to average approximately two classes per week. We offer a very flexible schedule to allow for a wide variety of days and times to choose from for your convenience.
Safe and Clean Learning Environment
All of our schools are professionally cleaned every evening to maintain a clean and sanitary environment for our students to train in. We understand how important this is to our student body.
